Relief

The first type of relief is sunken this is when you carve into the surface of clay making an image or design, this is the category my pieces fell into. The next type of relief is risen this is when you attach clay to the surface to create your design. The third method of relief is book relief this is when you carve into a book, creating different layers eventually becoming your drawn image. My medium was clay, I picked clay because its my favorite thing to work with. I love how every piece you create with clay has a different vibe. For my tiles I made up the drawings for my design and put it on tracing paper, traced it onto the clay and carved them out. When I was done I fired them then painted each with a similar color scheme. I am most proud of the precise lines and sides in this piece. I think its very clean line and organized looking which I am very proud of. If I could change one thing about it I would take the relief I did and put it onto some sort of pot or box. I felt like the tiles were a little too simple and boring. Overall I think this was a good simple project.

Art Article

Van Gough’s lost painting was just discovered in an attic were it had been placed after being claimed fake. This article explains how amazing it is that such an amazing, expensive, important painting was just disregarded and forgotten about. Throughout this article the author portrays Van Gough as a very important classy art figure. He is describe and painted as a person every artist looks up to. The second article I read was an article about the cutting of Van Gough’s ear. When I was searching about him this obviously caught my attention right away and I had to find what happened. So reading into it I was a little bit surprised. Apparently Van Gough cut off his own ear for an act of self-hurt this theory is very gross and disturbing. The second theory about the chopping off of his ear is that he and his friend got into a fight and with a changing sword his friend chops off his ear. To stop his friend from execution he doesn’t say a word and remains silent. The biggest thing to compare between these articles is how Van Gough is portrayed as a person. What’s an amazing artist in one is a troubled self-mutilating person in the other. It really shows you how the context of what you’re talking about someone can change how you view that person. Van Gogh seemed like an amazing figure in the art world and then a troubled person in the other. I think it is very cool that we were able to discover this amazing painting that can now be enjoyed and used as an inspiration to many future artists.

I had a great expirence with this painting. Before this project I had no idea how to even start a painting. We learned all the different techniques and how to mix colors to make the perfect combinations. We did some practice painting and eventually got a picture from a vacation and starting putting the techniques we learned to work. It wasnt easy but it was a great expirence and I learned alot about painting. My painting is from St. thomas. I think its so cool I get to have a real painting from a very memorable vacation.

printing project

We started off this project by researching two animals and environments to do our print on. I picked a fish and a zebra. We printed off pictures on them and put them in our sketchbooks. Then we made a sketch of each animal integrating the background of one picture with the animal in another so the sketch was our own. Then we picked which one we liked better and we played around with different frame combinations using the viewfinder. When we found which view was the best and sketched that again cleaning it up and making it look better. We then traced it onto tracing paper. On the linoleum we transferred our drawing. We cut out all the white parts of the linoleum. Finally we printed. Placing ink on the block and rolled it with the roller, then rolled that onto the linoleum and set that on the paper and rubbed on the ink. We then removed the paper and our print was done. For me this was a good project although it was very long and involved so many steps. I felt like though these steps the value of my original sketch was lost a little bit. I still think this was successful. I  like the finally lavender color I got mixing purple and white. One mistake I made was cutting out the whole piece in the top right corner I wish I would have left an outline. Overall I think this was really fun and a great learning experience.

Pancake Jaws

I really enjoyed this photo shop project. I worked with photo shop quite a bit last year but its been so long I didn't remember the details. What I love the most about this software is the unlimited possibilities. You can be creative and make something generic completely your own. This was pretty simple and not too nit picky which was good but I am excited to explore further into photo shop.

This project was really fun, but I did have some trouble along the way. My stencils turned out fine and the spray paint went good in the beginning, but when I was ready to spray my fourth stencil I couldn't find it. So I just sprayed it free hand. This did make things not as precise although it still turned out okay and resembles my picture. During this project I learned the best way to work on stuff like this is slow. You have to take your time and be as precise as possible. I really did enjoy this project though it was challenging it was a great experience. I chose this picture because I thought it was very expressive and fun. I loved the color scheme that I made on the computer and it translated nicely into spray paint. Overall I learned a lot from this project and had a good time.

Layers pro blending

The biggest difference between blending with layers pro and oil pastels is the ability to blend how ever much you want with layer pro. With oil pastels it is not as easy and it takes alot of nit picky switching colors to achieve the right blend. The biggest similarity is the finished product. In the end the layers pro is just as smooth and realistic as a drawing using oil pastels. When drawing it is so hard to accomplish that realistic feel without blending. Realistically everything is not one single color things are blended based on the light hitting it. This technique helps us show light in our drawings. I have come a long way drawing and this was one of the most important steps in making me a better artist. In this generation technology is very important. It is constantly improving and getting more advanced so it is crucial that art adjust to those same advancements to keep art alive forever.

Shoe contour line drawing

In the beginning of contour line drawings my drawings were very poor. I had no feel or technique and was not able to capture the right feel when using contour lines. As we practiced and did more I started to get better it was just more of a flow. I was able to better portray an object onto paper capturing those lines and creases; the things we normally leave out of drawings. The final contour line drawing was the shoe. I definitely did alot better on this then my first few drawings. I think I got the right angles and creases drawn. Overall this was a big improvement and success.

Cartoon Skeleton

For the Cartoon skeleton project I used tweety bird. I used a full set of bones that included the skull, shoulder, arms, fingers, neck, back, tail, pelvis, legs, feet, and toes. I used a very exaggerated skull because tweety has such a large head along with very long eye sockets and prominent cheek bones. I had the vertebra extend though the tail as the shape of the tail. One of the hardest parts to this was making her ribs and pelvis. She is on an angle which made the pelvis difficult to imagine without actually looking at something to draw and the ribs I had to make very small and at an angle. The feet were a little unique because you cant really see her toes. So I just made them look like what I imagined which is two long toes. Before we started this project I was definitely a little intimidated. I didn't even know where to start but once I started drawing I seemed to know what to do next. This definitely helped me learn to draw a lot better. Overall I really enjoyed this project and it was very beneficial.
