Sculpture final portfolio

What was you favorite material that you used this year? why did you like working with it?
My ABSOLUTE favorite material I was able to use this year was by far clay. Now its no secret that I really enjoyed using clay but I definitely want to explain why. I started out making clay tiles, fairly simply and to the point. Then I started making vessel type items like the ones above. My favorite type of artwork is artwork that can work and mesh into daily life, it could be functional it could be decor. But I like the idea of setting something out on a table for everyone to see and being able to take pride in it. My next point with using clay is how fun and truly simple it can be to work with, as long as you work with it and not against it. Clay wont do anything it doesn't want to do if you force it, it will break, crack, stress and in the end you wont get your desired product. Just working with it helps keep you non frustrated. Out of all the materials we had in our choosing clay lasts the longest. I could have some of these pieces forever and I love that. The wheel I just recently started using. I really do enjoy that as well and its for sure a great resource while working with clay.

What was your least favorite material you used?

Overall my least favorite material was cardboard. I used cardboard a lot in my marble drop. All though I used other items as well that was the majority of the material. Don't get me wrong I love the final product I think it turned out great. But one of my biggest pet peeves of art is being clean line and I think that has part to do with always working with clay and having it very clean line. But its very difficult to mold and hold in the place you want it to. If you make a mistake you cant attach a piece of cardboard or wet it to reverse the damage so it can very touchy and you have to make sure your precise. Another thing I don't like about cardboard as an art material is it does not look very good painted. Its grainy and takes a lot of coats but will still never be perfect. Although I did not enjoy it during this project doesn't mean I wouldn't be willy to give it another try in the future.

Regardless of weather you liked or disliked the project, which one did you learn, grow, or develop from the most?

This was the relief project, one pretty early in the semester. I made clay tiles with all different designs with colors that complimented each other. This project really opened up my creativity. Before this I was very exact and my art wasn't exactly me. This project showed me I could do something functional but really include myself and my personal style in it as well. This was the first piece I made that I have out in my house for everyone to see. I was so proud of this project when I was finished. That confidence really helped me moving forward as an artist. Painting I blended all my colors and used many different painting techniques like ombre in my middle piece. This was definitely  successful and I learned grew and develop as an artist all at the same time.
